Kyoto used to be Japan's capital until the transfer of the imperail court to Edo (renamed Tokyo) in 1868 which is the time of the imperail restoration. Some still believe that Kyoto is still the legel capital of Japan. Kyoto is in the Kansai region of Japan. The population in Kyoto is 1,465,917 people. About 20% of Japan's National Treasures and 14% of Important Cultural Properties exist in the city proper. Tourism forms a large base of kyoto's economic. One of the acaemic of the country.
